Spicy Lights Azalea.

Woody Ornamentals

The desire to bring plants from more temperate climates into Minnesota was a key component of the early woody ornamental plant breeding program at the University. From color to new varieties, University of Minnesota breeders have been successful in developing a wide variety of selections that have been instrumental in changing northen gardens. The University’s success in developing the cold-hardy and colorful the azaleas commonly referred to as the 'Lights' series continues to influence early spring landscapes in Minnesota.
